Square Enix Members Service Suspended After Breach Detected

Just when you thought the gaming industry was once again safe from hackers, another breach has been made public.  Square Enix, maker of the Final Fantasy series and the publisher responsible for the resurrection of the beloved Deus Ex, Tomb Raider and Hitman franchises has discovered a breach in their security.  As a precaution, they have shut down their Square Enix Members service and have begun investigating the matter.

According to a press release issued by Square Enix, service was suspended on Monday, December 12th at 10PM Pacific Time.  Emails have been sent to Square Enix Members stating the following:

Dear Square Enix Member,

You are receiving this email because Square Enix detected a limited server intrusion on December 12, 2011, and temporarily suspended the US/JP editions of the SQUARE ENIX MEMBERS service in order to conduct an investigation.

Based on our investigation, we have found no evidence at this point that any personal information was accessed. User login credentials and credit card information are not stored on the affected server. We are continuing to investigate.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by the temporary suspension of the SQUARE ENIX MEMBERS service. We take data security extremely seriously and we regret any inconvenience this may have caused our customers and fans. We appreciate your patience and support at this time as we finalize our investigation in the next few days.

All indications from Square Enix are that no user logon (usernames or passwords) information, or personal/confidential information (credit cards, phone numbers) were obtained and they have informed the Japanese Government.  Pending further investigation, Square Enix’s Members service will be offline until further notice.
