Skylanders Revealed As Best Selling 2012 Game Worldwide

The title Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure was a huge release to be sure, with store’s shelves constantly empty of all products.  So it should come as no surprise then that it has been rated the number one selling game of 2012 so far.

According to The NDP group, GfK, Charttrack, and internal Activision estimates, the game hit-record setting sales between the start of January and April 30th.  Although no specific numbers were given, Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, had this to say:

“This achievement is incredibly gratifying, and quite an honor for everyone at Activision and our team at Toys for Bob.  It was a simple idea really—bridging the gap between real and virtual play—but one that required tremendous creativity to execute and communicate to our audience. It spawned a new category and a new platform for play in an overwhelmingly challenging marketplace.  We couldn’t be happier that there is an ever-growing universe of Portal Masters out there.”

While it’s unknown just how many units have sold in that specific time frame, we know that Skylanders has sold over three million copies worldwide (according to VGChartz) for all systems since its October release, which is an achievement in itself.  A sequel to the title, Skylanders Giants, will be on show at E3.  Think it will be just as successful?  Leave a comment below!
