Have you completed A World of Keflings, but still want more?  Well fear not, you can get your hands on the second expansion Sugar, Spice, and Not So Nice now!  If you’ve got a sweet tooth, and are jonesing for some more Keflings, this is one candy-themed expansion you will need to sink your teeth into.

A first for the Keflings series, Sugar, Spice, and Not So Nice features an actual storyline – instead of just building a kingdom all willy-nilly.  In this expansion, the evil wizard Waldorf and his plump nephew Augustus are attempting to take control of Candy Peak through the wizard’s dastardly plans and Augustus’s never-ending stomach.  It’s up to the player, fan-created Kari the Last Chocolatier, and the memory-wiped king of the land, Charlie the amnesiac unicorn, to step up, rebuild the peak, and help its candy people (the Gingerlings) roam freely and happily once again.  While it may not be the sweetest story in the treat bag, it gives the general gameplay an extra drive – which is very tasty in its own right!

Speaking of gameplay, Sugar, Spice, and Not So Nice leaves much of the base mechanics unchanged. Players still explore the environment for resources, with the exception that everything is made of candy.  You and your Keflings will shear cotton candy trees, scoop chocolate lava from a volcano, and pull caramel from the Candy Apple River.  These mouth-rotting (yet delicious) materials replace resources like wood and stone from the main game, and are used to create other candy-based building materials like gummy-fish, and pieces of structure such as the Gummy Garage.  It’s the A World of Keflings you know and love, but wrapped in more sugar than you can fathom!

Of course, these  delectable adaptations carry over to the expansion’s aesthetics and sound as well. The environment has been redesigned into a world made entirely out of candy.  As you walk across the hard-candy pavement or pink icing fields, the sugary ground squishes beneath your feet.  You pass by gumdrop mushrooms on your way to the Gingerbread House Factory to make some gummy fish – to get the tasty pieces to build a cottage for your Gingerlings.  As you place said materials, you can hear the sugar binding by a distinct sticking sound.  Everything in this DLC chapter will have your sweet-tooth either drooling or aching, as the candy theme is delivered tastefully!

Whether you’re a candy lover, need a new dose of A World of Keflings, or both, you’ll find Sugar, Spice, and Not So Nice to be exactly what you were looking for – and your dentist’s worst nightmare.  With the same fantastic core gameplay, wrapped in a deliciously sweet candy wonderland, this is one must have expansion! Just be carefully, you may need some insulin by the time you’re done!

Final score: 5.0 / 5.0 and a tasty chocolate cake.
