So… Are You Fallout 4 or Not? The Survivor2299 Hubbub

I remember when I was a little girl, my brothers used to play this dirty little mind trick on me to get me all riled up. They’d whisper fake words into each other’s ears, and as soon as I got close enough to barely make out what they were saying, they would both whisper (albeit slightly louder to make sure I heard): “Don’t tell Rachel.”  It drove me nuts. I just had to know what I wasn’t supposed to know!

25 Hours Can Truly Make a Difference! Join Us For The Extra Life Marathon.

Gamers usually start out falling in love with video games at a very young age. I know I can’t remember a time when I didn’t play, so it makes sense that we would encourage and support our youth through the same medium that makes us feel so young at heart. And what better way to do that than to take those games and do a marathon for children who need our support the most, because they’re sick or injured?

Can OnLive Be A Success When It Launches In Europe?

The cloud gaming service, OnLive, makes its way to Europe in September, but can it be a success and become the ‘fourth option’ for gamers?

Being from the UK, I’ve gotten quite used to having to wait for most technological things to make their way here.  But if we Brits are anything, we are patient.  However, every once in a while something will come around that even my almost saintly level of British patience can’t take.  OnLive is one of them.

OnLive is somewhat of an enigma here in the UK and across Europe in general.  Since its launch at E3 2010, any solid pieces of information in relation to its European release have been few and far between.   Read On »

Game On: Extra Life 2011

On October 15th at 8am, for my second year in a row I’m going to fire up my Xbox and embark on the Long Road I call Extra Life:  24 hours of gaming in the name of charity.  I’m sure that once more, around the 18th consecutive hour of my unblinking eyes being seared by the merciless television, I will pause and wonder just what the hell got me thinking this was a great idea.  And the answer will be as simple as it is cliché.

It’s for the kids. Read On »

ESRB Mobile App Does Well to Make Our Lives (As Parents) Easier

Being a gamer and a father, I’m well aware of the goings on in the Games Industry and what my 12 year old daughter should and should not be exposed to when playing video games.  However, many parents simply don’t know the difference between Call of Duty and Pokemon.  While the ESRB has done wonders for the gaming industry in the way of education, and clearly marking games today with a rating and a brief description as to why the game received the rating that it did, many parents still seem to need more information to help them make a determination on whether a game purchase is ok for their child or not.

For example, take Halo: Reach and Duke Nukem.  Both games receive an M rating.  However, parents may have seen Reach and said to themselves, “Well, it’s just a bunch of guys shooting aliens.  That’s not all that bad.”  Then they look at Duke and wonder how it can be any different.  In reality, we as gamers know that Duke is a far cry from Halo, as the Chief has never come across topless dancers or received a BJ in a stall on a Covenant carrier.  So these poor parents buy Duke Nukem, take it to their frothing 12-year-old and Read On »

Nerdcore Rising – Get Elevated!

Damian Hess, better known by his stage moniker MC Frontalot, takes us for a behind the scenes look as they embarked on their first tour.  Starting in South Carolina and driving cross-country you follow Front, Sturgis, G Minor 7, Black Lotus, and Brandon in the good times and bad as they explore the unknown by bringing Nerdcore Hip Hop to the masses.

Nerdcore Hip Hop, a term first coined by MC Frontalot in a 2000 song of the same name, has become the musical focal point of nerds, geeks, and freaks since the spawning the entire sub-genre.  This style of music combines hip-hop with nerdy pop culture references such as Star Wars, Comic Book Conventions or Japanimation as the topics of these songs. Dark Souls: As It Once Was, So Shall It Be

They’re not ready for this…or are they?

As someone whose gaming career began in the days of the 2600, I have borne witness to a shift in the arc of game design.  Now, most everyone will agree games are ultimately about entertainment.  What changed was the root of that entertainment.  Games now tend towards providing a bit of escapism for the player without them having to put much effort in.  Think of it as an interactive movie where the obstacle, be it a giant monster or arcane puzzle, is merely a plot device moving you on to the next scene.  Those who wish for a greater challenge have the option to increase the difficulty, but rare now is the game where the difficulty simply “Is”.  Dark Souls, like its spiritual predecessor Demons Souls, is such a game.

Damn kids, in my day this was considered a mid-boss.

Some of you already get it, others of you require a frame of reference (due to my advanced age, no doubt) to really understand what this means.  The entertainment value in many games of the 8 and 16 bit eras was drawn from the challenge they posed.  Battletoads, Ninja Gaiden, Zillion, TMNT, Ghouls and Ghosts, Shinobi, and R-Type come to mind.  Read On »

Bungie Waves Goodbye to Ten Years of Halo

Bungie’s Halo: Combat Evolved is widely credited as the game that single-handedly put Microsoft’s Xbox Console on the map.  Released in November of 2001, it rapidly began to break records selling over one million units just a few months later in April 2002.  It would go on to sell over five million copies and forever associate the Master Chief, Halo, and Bungie with the Xbox and Xbox 360 consoles.

Bungie’s Final Gift. Burn Bright. Burn Blue.

Halo has become a cultural phenomenon on a scale that only popular sci-fi juggernauts such as Star Wars and Star Trek have seen.  Books, comics, action figures, and even LEGO Read On »
