Protect Your Vita’s Screen with Skinomi’s TechSkin – Review
If you’re like me and love your gadgets, you want to protect them. With so many companies cashing in on the mobile market with various screen protectors, I was overwhelmed with which company to trust my beautiful Vita’s screen with. Then I came across Skinomi, a maker in screen protectors of various forms for your favorite device. After thoroughly giving it a run-through with play testing for durability I have come to a conclusion. Does it live up to what its makers say or am I still left with a naked Vita?
I ordered my Skimoni TechSkin Sony Playstation Vita Screen Protector through Amazon, though you can also order through their site directly. When I received my shipment, I was expecting an envelope with UPS leaving their mark of carelessness with bent marks and smashed edges. However, I was extremely happy to see that they had taken the handling of shipment into consideration and placed everything in a thick, secure tube. This ensures that nothing would get lost and that the screen protector wouldn’t get damaged in any way. After realizing I could then put my collection of POGS into the tube, I quickly rifled through the contents!
You get one screen protector, instructions, a static-free cleaning cloth, liquid solution made up of water and detergent, and a squeegee. The instructions are vague but get the point across; there should be no confusion as to what needs to be done in applying the TechSkin to your Vita. After washing my hands and polishing the Vita’s screen free of any residue and dust, it was time to get down and dirty. I recommend doing all of this in a very well-lit area so dust particles are visible. The bathroom is also a great setting for this process, as running hot water from the faucet cuts down on the dust from within the room.
The TechSkin is a wet applicator screen protector, meaning you will use the included solution to apply it to your Vita. So if you are not a fan of electronics meeting liquid you may want to look elsewhere. However, I assure you, if you follow the directions, you won’t have anything to worry about. Spraying the adhesive side with the solution very lightly from afar gave me enough leg room to move the screen protector around the Vita to ensure a comfortable fit. The material used in the protector is rather stretchable, so be careful not to use too much force when applying it to your favorite handheld.
After getting the TechSkin on my Vita, it was time to use the squeegee. I found this tool extremely efficient as I was able to quickly remove any bubbles and excess solution from my Vita. Within hours, I could see other micro bubbles and any extra solution disappearing from the screen like magic. You do not have to worry about any scratches or bubbles made in the process as they eventually evaporate or disappear from the screen protector curing. The real test came when I literally took my car key and ran it across the screen. A clear scratch was quickly left behind, but after playing a game of MLB 12: The Show, the scratch gradually vanished as if I hadn’t just used a key on it. I also found that the screen protector cuts down on screen glare slightly, offering a bit more of an enjoyable play experience.
If you want to remove the protector for any reason, all you need to do is gently warm the side you are going to lift with your hand. However, the adhesive doesn’t remove easily in normal room temperature – you need to purposefully be looking to take it off. This is a good thing, as extensive play would otherwise rub off the TechSkin.
I was extremely impressed with this product; I could not find anything wrong with it – especially for the asking price of $7 (on average). If you are looking for protection for the most important component of your Vita, look no further!
The Skinomi TechSkin scores a 5/5.
